The 2009 La Encantada Pinot Noir is our third single-barrel (lessthan 25 cases) wine from the striking Santa Rita Hills vineyardplanted by Sta. Rita Hills pinot pioneer Richard Sanford. Thevineyard was one of the first vineyards in Santa Barbara County tobe certified organic by the California Certified Organic Farmers(CCOF). The hillside placement of this vineyard and its proximityto coastal fog and winds produces a low-vigor environment thatdelivers a balanced wine that is taut with an intensity of fruitand a rush of acidity.

Very similar to our 2008 vintage, this wine is well-rounded andwell-structured. The color is vibrant ruby, showing great clarity.The aroma speaks of classic central/south coast pinot noir –cranberry, cherry, strawberry, a slight earthiness and a hint ofcinnamon. On the palate, an intense but brooding red and dark berryflavor unfolds, with fine tannins, slight minerality and niceacidity. With this type of structure, the La Encantada will be agreat wine for sharing with friends over dinner (think soy- andgarlic-marinated skirt steak on the grill) and for tucking away inthe cellar.

Amber Ridge vineyard in Russian River Valley is located on ahillside immediately adjacent to the famed Gary Farrell Starr RidgeVineyard in Windsor. Amber Ridge was planted in 2000 with clones115, 667 and 777 on 101-14 rootstock and was adopted by severalhigh-end wineries for its inaugural harvest in 2003. In 2009, wewere fortunate to have acquired one ton of this hard-to-get fruit,allowing us to produce just under 50 cases.

The color is a lovely ruby red, light to medium in shade. As thiswine opens up, aromas of dried rose petals, strawberry and redcherry come together. On the palate is the classic Amber Ridge thatwe love: sweet cherry, lush fruit, and a smooth, strawberries andcream finish, with a touch of cocoa. This wine is drinking verywell right now and stands on its own by the glass or paired withpan-roasted pork tenderloin with Asian five-spice seasonings.

Oppenlander Vineyard is well off the beaten path in MendocinoCounty outside of the town of Comptche. It’s about eight and a halfmiles from the Pacific Ocean as the crow flies at an elevation of250 feet. Oppenlander is owned by the Shandel family, 5thgeneration owners of the property, and was originally homesteadedin the 1860s by their ancestors from Denmark (via the Gold Rush inAustralia). The vineyard sees consistently cool temperatures acrossthe growing season and is harvested later than other regions. Thiscooler temperature range and coastal proximity can deliver acertain “oceanic acidity,” lending structure and complexity to thewine.

The most striking observation about the 2009 Oppenlander Pinot Noiris its color – a vibrant violet-red color that has been visiblefrom crush all the way through to the bottle. On the nose, driedlavender mixes with mushroom and earth tones for subtle aromatics.On the palate, tart cherry and raspberry are wrapped in a tautpackage that shows a lot of balance. Definitely one for aging andwell-suited for pairing with your favorite pinot-friendly meal.

Situated at 1600’ elevation with a commanding south-east facingview of Anderson Valley, Rich Savoy’s vineyard above Boonville ismeticulously farmed in multiple blocks to achieve the complexflavors that each part of the vineyard yields. We acquired enoughfruit from this vineyard to make just under 50 cases of wine, sothis is a true find.

The best word to describe this wine is exotic. Wonderful floralaromatics integrate with a slight caramel edge and Asian spice onthe nose. The palate is brisk with bright cherry, orange peel andcoriander. Intense red cherry and great acidity punctuate thefinish. With such great structure, the wine will unfold after a fewhours after being opened; with bottle aging, it will develop evenmore complexity over time.

Hayley Vineyard is located in Anderson Valley where warm sunny daysgive way to foggy afternoons and cool nights, allowing flavors todevelop over a long period of time. The Hayley Vineyard pinot noiris all about that classic Anderson Valley cherry fruit. On thenose, in addition to the cherry, is a hint of malted milk and asweet toastiness from the oak. At the beginning, you get hints ofpastry and cherry pie. On the mid-palate is a soft, silky mouthfeelenrobed in strawberry and rhubarb, ending in a clean finish. Alight to medium-bodied pinot noir, the Hayley Vineyard pinot noiris truly enjoyable on its own or with your favorite meal.
