Mendocino County yields many different characteristics of Pinot Noir thanks to its diverse landscape and climate. In the Anderson Valley where the diurnal shift (range of temperature in any given day) can be as extreme as 50°F, the valley cuts laterally through the Coast Range, acting as a natural funnel that pulls cold marine air and thick fog directly from the Pacific Ocean.

In Mendocino Ridge is a remote and higher elevation appellation that is sort of the wild west of Pinot Noir growing in Mendocino County. Mariah Vineyard sits at 2400' elevation, where temperatures are cooler than the valley, but the vines, all dry-farmed, get more sunlight hours.

And Oppenlander Vineyard is set in the newest AVA, Comptche, eight miles from the Mendocino Coast. With no mountain ranges sitting between it and the coast, Oppenlander's coastal proximity delivers a certain “oceanic acidity,” lending structure and complexity to the wine.

This three pack is a perfect way to explore the different expressions of Pinot Noir, either one at a time or sharing all three at a dinner party.

Mariah Vineyard is set in Mendocino Ridge, a remote and higher elevation appellation that is sort of the wild west of Pinot Noir growing in Mendocino County. While the area of the AVA is over 250,000 acres, the only suitable land for grape-growing is above 1,200 feet elevation and currently about 75 or so acres are currently planted to wine grapes.

In the 1970s, Dan Dooling and Vicki Tomola purchased land at 2,400 feet elevation above Point Arena and planted Zinfandel, Syrah and Petite Syrah, then later Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. Dan and Vicki's family are now involved in the farming practices of the vineyard. Daughter Nicole and her husband Michael have introduced regenerative farming practices to promote ecological life and biodiversity across the vineyard.

The Pinot Noir block that we source from at Mariah comes from two different clones, Dijon 115 and Pommard, planted on a combination of Hugo and Josephine loams over a well drained Sandstone fractured Shale subsoil. The vines run east west with 10-foot rows and 7 foot vine spacing, with quadrilateral cordon training and is dry-farmed - a particularly beneficial trait during draught years.

All of this yields a complex and naunced expression of coastal, mountaintop Pinot Noir.

Vineyard Information:

Filigreen Farm is situated on 97 acres in Anderson Valley, just outside of the town of Boonville as you're heading northwest. It is a Demeter-certified Biodynamic and CCOF-certified organic diversified farm whose primary products are tree fruits, blueberries, olives, wine and table grapes, and houses a production garden (flowers and vegetables), livestock, apiary, and an ongoing inquiry into water revitalization.

Situated between mixed coniferous forest of redwood and fir to the west and oak woodland to the east, Filigreen borrows from both climatic zones to house a diverse range of cultivars. Chris and Stephanie Tebbutt are stewards of Filigreen Farm and work with other families year-round to experiment and research different techniques to enable the farm to be productive in an independent and sustainable way. In 2023, we harvested Dijon 115 clone Pinot Noir from Filigreen Farm in mid-late September.

Tasting Notes: Hold up a glass of the 2023 Filigreen Farm Pinot Noir to the light and you’ll see a rich, crystalline garnet color. Take in the nuanced aromatics, which show notes of brambly lingonberry, fresh violets, dried cherry, cedarwood, and sweet tarragon. The palate is bursting with juicy Alpine strawberry and rhubarb, balanced by a brisk acidity and peppery tannins. A mixture of herbal and earthy notes show through, including roasted shiitake mushroom, fennel, cool pennyroyal, and pink peppercorn.

In this vintage, we used a mix of once-used and neutral French oak barrels, yielding a subtle toast that broadens the mid palate. Light on its feet, yet bountiful with its red fruit core, the wine resolves into a lengthy finish showcasing dried lavender, clove, and subtle cedar all framed with incredibly fine-grained tannins. Drink now and enjoy over the next 10 years.

Tasting Notes:

A beautiful, vibrant medium garnet color fills the glass. Aromas of red cherry & mulberry linger to create a depth of red fruit flavor. Around the edges of this wine, layers of cedar, clove, and cola hit the spice notes just at the right time. The palate has medium body, and its bright acidity and soft tannins make it truly enjoyable to enjoy on its own, with an afternoon cheese and charcuterie board or with dinner.

Hints of dusty earth, coastal brush and salt air bring to a mind an afternoon walk along a seaside mountain in late summer. This Pinot Noir stays with you and the palate carries fruit and spice through to a delicious finish. What should you pair this with? Anything. Dry herb-crusted pork tenderloin on the grill or an autumn salad with butternut squash, beets and goat cheese are just a couple of suggestions, but there's a versatility to this wine and it will only grow more complex with age. Oppenlander Vineyard is well off the beaten path in Mendocino County outside of the town of Comptche. It’s about eight and a half miles from the Pacific Ocean as the crow flies at an elevation of 250 feet. Oppenlander is owned by the Shandel family, 5th generation owners of the property, and was originally homesteaded in the 1860s by their ancestors from Denmark (via the Gold Rush in Australia). The vineyard sees consistently cool temperatures across the growing season and is harvested later than other regions. This cooler temperature range and coastal proximity can deliver a certain “oceanic acidity,” lending structure and complexity to the wine.

Oppenlander Vineyard gives off a coastal vibe of Pinot Noir: fresh and lush dark red fruit, with a salinity and minerality that recalls the Mendocino coast sea breeze. The 2022 vintage was nourished with plentiful winter rains, proceeded with relatively cool weather, took a turn with a hot early September and wrapped with some cooling conditions. A lower yield on the 2022 crop and the additional hang time that Oppenlander enjoys on the cooler coastal sight delivers concentrated flavors, color and acidity, along with great structure.

Tasting Notes: In the glass, the 2022 Oppenlander shows a medium garnet color, while on the nose, pronounced aromas of ripe strawberry, pomegranate and dried rose petal command your attention. What follows are subtle layers of spices and earth: cardamom, clove, and a minerality that gives a nod to seafoam. Take a sip and you'll enjoy flavors of muddled strawberries and ripe raspberry framed by a focused palate with fresh acidity and super-fine tannins. A lengthy finish teases out dark cherry and cocoa to bring a big smile to your face. Once again, Oppenlander delivers the goods.

An extremely cold site, the wine’s acidity is the star, perforated by light-bodied layers of rose petal, dried herb, forest mushroom, and stems. The oak and tannins are well-integrated. 93 Points, Decanter (June 2025): This later-harvested Pinot Noir vineyard from the Mendocino County site, Oppenlander Vineyard, sits at a lower elevation, not far from the Pacific, and retains a consistent coolness throughout the growing season. It's effusive with red florals, as dusty rose petals and mountain scrub are evocative of the forested growing region. The palate is elegant, and mineral freshness ignites a lift that carries the fresh raspberries, salty blood orange, and smoky clove spice to the finish. - Clive Pursehouse

Tasting Notes: Our first red Pinot Noir from Filigreen Farm is vibrant in every way, from the ruby-garnet color to the bright red fruit aromatics to the zippy acidity on the palate. The 2022 Filigreen Farm Pinot Noir exhibits dense aromas of pomegranate and raspberry, interlaced with floral, herbal and spiced black tea notes. Brisk acidity awakens the palate, welcome a host of food pairings, from a local farmstead cheese or a grilled salmon topped with herb butter. As medium-rich red fruit fills the mouth, a long finish and fine grained tannins linger. This wine is ready to drink now, but the acidity and structure suggest additional layers will be revealed with age. 142 cases produced.

Oppenlander Vineyard gives off a coastal vibe of Pinot Noir: fresh and lush dark red fruit, with a salinity and minerality that recalls the Mendocino coast sea breeze. Overall, the 2021 vintage was a warm, but not hot vintage and draught conditions results in lower yielding crops. All of this results in concentrated flavors, color and acidity, along with great structure.

Winemaker and Vintners’ Tasting Notes: Showing a beautiful medium ruby hue with a tinge of violet on the edges, the 2021 Oppenlander opens up with aromas of black cherry, raspberry candy, and hints of lilacs and black tea. Rich dark fruit envelops the palate, complemented by notes of clove, rhubarb, sandalwood and a subtle interplay of vanilla and cocoa. The aromatics on this wine also smell like harvest – that complex mix of earthy, flowery and sweet fragrance that can evoke nostalgia as we enter a cooler time of year. How appropriate as we release this ninth vintage of our Pinot Noir made from this coastal-influenced site.

The structure and subtle fine grain tannins of this wine result in a long, fruit-driven finish and ensure years of complexity unfolding as the wine ages gracefully. As you think about autumn dishes like roasted pork with butternut squash or herb-crusted lamb chops, this wine will provide inspiration for some great food pairings.

Roma's Vineyard was planted high above Anderson Valley by Dean and Suzi Carrell in 1993, using Pommard cuttings from Ted Bennet and Deborah Cahn’s Navarro Vineyards. Roma’s Vineyard is organically farmed and located at 1850 feet above sea level on Lone Tree Ridge, over looking the town of Boonville, and the soil is comprised of Gold Ridge Loam over sandstone.

Winemaker's and Vintners' tasting notes: The intense nose of the 2020 Roma’s is disguised by its pale appearance. Crafted from 100% Pommard clone, the nose reveals aromas of freeze-dried strawberries, pomegranate, and freshly milled cedar. Mouth-filling with generous acidity, flavors of cherry hard candy, hojicha tea leaves, and a touch of creme brûlée reward the drinker.

Try pairing this with a grilled salmon on cedar plank, with a miso glaze to bring out the woodsy and umami notes, respectively. The richness of the oil in the salmon will connect nicely with the fine tannins and complement the pomegranate fruit notes of this mountaintop wine. Drinkable now, but will improve with cellaring over the next 7+ years.

James Suckling, 93 pts: This smoky, peppery-tasting wine has a singular style, wrapping earthy and savory flavors in rather soft tannins. It's broad, earthy and generous in grilled plum, forest floor and beef jus notes that are delicious and different.

Jeb Dunnuck, 90 pts: Only the second vintage of this vineyard-designate, the 2020 Pinot Noir Roma's Vineyard comes from a site 1,850 feet above the valley floor, exposed to the elements. Forest meets mineral-driven red fruit and citrus notes within a medium-bodied density that shows hints of tea and forest. Drink through 2030.

Decanter, 89 pts: A lot is happening with this single-vineyard Pinot Noir, one of the more muscular wines from Waits-Mast in the lineup I tasted. Very grippy tannins form the foundation of this dark, brooding wine, with black cherry, smoky clove, and pithy grapefruit and tangerine peel. The finish is intensely mineral with loads of smoky clove and white pepper. Absolutely the Pinot Noir you want with a peppercorn-encrusted New York Strip.

Vinography: Light to medium ruby in the glass, this wine smells of earth, forest floor, and cherry fruit. In the mouth, that earthy, savory quality continues as dark cherry and forest floor flavors mix with herbs and a hint of licorice root. There’s also an umami saltiness to the wine that lingers in the finish with a hint of bitterness. Faintest of tannins. (12/3/23)
