Mendocino County yields many different characteristics of Pinot Noir thanks to its diverse landscape and climate. In the Anderson Valley where the diurnal shift (range of temperature in any given day) can be as extreme as 50°F, the valley cuts laterally through the Coast Range, acting as a natural funnel that pulls cold marine air and thick fog directly from the Pacific Ocean.
In Mendocino Ridge is a remote and higher elevation appellation that is sort of the wild west of Pinot Noir growing in Mendocino County. Mariah Vineyard sits at 2400' elevation, where temperatures are cooler than the valley, but the vines, all dry-farmed, get more sunlight hours.
And Oppenlander Vineyard is set in the newest AVA, Comptche, eight miles from the Mendocino Coast. With no mountain ranges sitting between it and the coast, Oppenlander's coastal proximity delivers a certain “oceanic acidity,” lending structure and complexity to the wine.
